Kitchen and Bathroom Design Continues To Be a Strong Focus in Homes
New survey results highlight evolving trends in kitchen and bathroom design.
New data from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey is revealing the latest trends in kitchen and bathroom design.
Demand for kitchen-related home features, such as working pantries, coffee bars, outdoor kitchens and even additional kitchen facilities were on the rise last year. Additionally, there was accelerated demand for drinking water filtration, smart appliances, and induction cooking appliances.
“Policy conversations surrounding natural gas use in new homes and an increased interest in indoor air quality could be one of the driving forces behind the large increase in demand for induction cooking appliances,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “Meanwhile, the convenience of hands-free faucets— brought on during the pandemic—has continued to grow in popularity in both kitchens and bathrooms.”
Survey results also found that while the demand for the number of bathrooms in homes has stabilized, radiant heated floors and wall hung toilets increased in popularity for bathrooms.
Findings of the report also revealed residential architecture firm business conditions for the fourth quarter of 2021, which included:
- Project billings, inquiries, and design contracts ended 2021 strong.
- Project backlogs remained healthy at residential architecture firms in Q4 of 2021.
- Residential firms in all regions continued to report solid business conditions in Q4 of 2021.
The AIA Home Design Trends Survey is conducted quarterly with a panel of more than 300 architecture firms that concentrate their practice in the residential sector. More information on the latest survey results can be reviewed on AIA’s website.
