L.A.-Based Nadel Architecture + Planning Partners with Top Portuguese Design Firm, Saraiva + Associados

The partnership will blend global architectural styles in multifamily and mixed-use projects to redefine not only where, but how people live.

Nadel Architecture + Planning, one of Los Angeles’ premier architecture firms, announces its partnership with Lisbon-based Saraiva + Associados or “S+A.” The partnership seeks to benefit from Nadel’s 50-year legacy of award-winning design in multiple project types in Los Angeles and U.S. markets while leveraging S+A’s global experience as the ninth largest residential practice in the world and the largest architectural firm in Portugal.

The overarching aim of the partnership is to create a collaborative design studio that delivers exceptional design and service to meet the growing multifamily residential needs of Los Angeles and the U.S.

S+A, Nadel Architects and Design FirmAccording to Greg Lyon, chairman, and principal of Nadel Architecture + Planning, the Saraiva + Nadel collaboration will bring together a seasoned team with international perspectives, domestic knowledge, and a combined 75 years of excellence in design, service and project delivery.

“We are thrilled to be able to work together in a collaborative, multidisciplined approach that will allow us to deliver highly successful projects for clients, residents, visitors, and communities,” says Lyon. “Partnering with S+A was a natural fit as both firms share a deep understanding of design’s power to positively influence communities and improve quality of life. With our leadership, innovation, and creativity in programming, technical design, and sustainable design, we will be able to execute high-quality, multifamily units that reflect the cultural shifts taking place in American city centers. As a cultural hub, Los Angeles is the perfect place to foster this partnership.”

In a recent survey by Urban Land Institute, 50% of people said that walkability is a high priority in where they would choose to live. A Brookings Institution study concluded that convenient, amenity-rich communities are increasingly appealing, and that 63% of millennials would prefer to live where they do not need a car often, according to Patrick Winters, president and principal of Nadel Architecture + Planning.

Architects looking at plans“Los Angeles is undergoing a tremendous period of evolution and we are increasingly seeing a desire for people to experience a localized sense of community while still getting to enjoy the benefits of larger urban life, a concept that is already prevalent abroad, and can be observed in many European cities,” says Winters. “Because the need for housing is so great, designers must innovate to create projects with higher unit counts, while still delivering the sense of luxury, quality of life, and connection to community that people are looking for. This includes developing housing that incorporates community amenities, retail, and restaurant space to help redefine convenience and mix leisure with everyday life. In addition to our current multifamily studio, the Saraiva | Nadel studio will allow us to pursue multifamily and mixed-use projects of exceptional ambition, scale and complexity.”

According to Miguel Saraiva, CEO & founder of S+A, his firm exists to enhance the built environment through versatility of architectural solutions that are drawn from a global approach to problem-solving.

“S+A not only encompasses architecture and urban planning, but also areas of interior design, sustainability, and investment advising. Given our diverse, global experience in countries including Colombia, Switzerland, and Vietnam to name a few, we have the unique ability to create architectural projects that appeal to the values of the local community, while still incorporating macro design themes across cultures. It is this forward-thinking approach that underlines S+A’s profile as a firmly established global studio,” says Saraiva.

According to Curtis Scharfenaker, a senior partner and CEO of S+A US, who directs the growth and development of S+A in the United States, the Nadel & S+A partnership will deliver high-quality multi-family residential projects to clients that need an innovative global design perspective combined with the skills and commitment to provide the highest quality service during the complete design to building life cycle.

“In the fight against climate change, we must address the role that architecture and construction can play in addressing the growing global environmental crisis,” says Scharfenaker. “It is this careful reflection that has led S+A to adopt sustainability as a fundamental value in all projects. Together with Nadel, we will incorporate strategies that address all facets of building sustainability, improving the environmental performance of projects to help create a greener word, while also emphasizing the quality, comfort, and artistic integrity of design.”

Scharfenaker continues: “This partnership truly emphasizes quality and exceeding the expectations of our clients as well as the communities we serve. Our mutual openness to the world allows us to respond to the challenges arising in a constantly changing society and to create built environments that provide enriched experiences and strengthened social connections.”
